On this apple we’ve got some scale
insects. Just those small grayish dots with a red halo around the outside.
The scale insects form a protective barrier over the top of
themselves, and they’re typically found on the wood structure of the tree on
the branches, but then they do have a mobile stage and they can settle on fruit
and that’s where they pose the biggest threat because if this scale were found
on fruit in a export market then those fruit could get rejected because of
biosecurity risk and so it’s really important to keep the scale numbers down
to reduce the risk of scale being found on fruit. Especially because they do like
to position themselves on this end of the fruit which can be protected from
the washes, and so it’s quite hard to actually get rid of them.
